Wirral welcomes the Olympic Torch - 6th June 2012

Thousands of people lined the streets to welcome the Olympic Flame to Wirral on Friday evening. Many attended a special event in Birkenhead Park to see the Spice Girls Mel C holding the Olympic Torch.

I went to Birkenhead Park earlier in the day where hundreds of schoolchildren were taking part in a special sports day organised by Wirral Council. There was an opportunity to try out many different sports ahead of the games this summer. It was great to see so many children taking part in the activities and having fun getting involved in sport.

With only weeks to go until the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony spirits were running high as they anticipated the arrival of the torch. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many to see the Olympics torch relay come to Wirral.

After the sports day I hopped on the Mersey Ferry to accompany the Olympic Flame on its final journey of the day – on a ferry ride from Woodside over to Liverpool.

I recently paid a visit to the Olympic Village and it is looking fantastic. I am sure that the London Games will be a great success and like many people I wasn’t lucky enough to get tickets but I look forward to watching on TV.
