Proud to be the first patron of Liverpool Pride - 1 August 2012

THIS week I became the first official patron of Liverpool Pride.

Pride is not just about the annual festival that is taking place in Liverpool this weekend, the organisation does so much to celebrate the diversity in communities across Merseyside and works to break down barriers, stand up for rights and insist on equality for lesbian, gay bi-sexual and transgender people.

Liverpool Pride was established two years ago following a number of attacks in the city and now takes place each year to coincide with the anniversary of murdered gay teenager Michael Causer.

Such horrific attacks remind us that there is still work to be done to tackle discrimination and prejudice and that is why events like Liverpool Pride are so important.

In just two years Liverpool Pride festival has established itself as one of the major highlights in the regional calendar. The first Liverpool Pride attracted 20,000 people and this increased to more than 44,000 last year and this year more than 50,000 people are expected to attend. It looks like it is going to be the best event yet with acts including X Factor’s Marcus Collins, Atomic Kitten’s Liz McClarnon and a number of other high profile guest appearances. A march will also take place through the city followed by a big street party between the Pier Head and the Stanley Street quarter! I’ll be there and I hope many Wirral News readers will go along too.

This weekend is our chance to show the Liverpool city region off as the wonderfully colourful, vibrant and accepting place that it is.
